Many employees continue working while receiving Social Security. Leaders in your business can play a key role in helping those employees understand how their earnings may interact with their benefits.
What Leaders & HR Managers Should Know
Employees who receive Social Security retirement benefits can continue working, but their earnings may affect the amount of benefits they receive—especially if they have not yet reached full retirement age. The Social Security Administration (SSA) sets annual earnings limits, and exceeding those limits can lead to temporary benefit withholding.
What is Full Retirement Age?
Full Retirement Age (FRA), also called "normal retirement age," is the age at which an individual qualifies for unreduced Social Security benefits based on their lifetime earnings. FRA is determined by the SSA and varies depending on your birth year. For example, people turning 62 in 2026 have a full retirement age of 67. Reaching FRA allows you to receive your maximum monthly benefit, known as the Primary Insurance Amount (PIA), without any reductions for early claiming
2027 Earnings Limits
- Employees who will NOT reach full retirement age in 2027
-
- Annual earnings limit: $25,560 (up from $24,480)
-
- Withholding rule: For every $2 earned above the limit, SSA withholds $1 in benefits.
- Employees who WILL reach full retirement age in 2027
-
- Annual earnings limit: $67,920 (up from $65,160), applying only to earnings before the month they reach FRA
-
- Withholding rule: For every $3 earned above the limit, SSA withholds $1 in benefits.
Why This Matters
Employees may want to adjust their schedules or request changes in their hours to stay under the limit. Leaders and HR can support employees by:
- Providing clear information about how earnings affect benefits
- Helping employees estimate their annual earnings
- Coordinating with payroll to ensure employees understand their projected income
- Encouraging employees to consult SSA directly for personalized guidance
Practical Example to Share With Employees
If an employee under FRA expects to earn $27,560 in 2027, that’s $2,000 over the limit. SSA would withhold $1,000 in benefits for the year.
Leadership Takeaway
Your guidance helps employees balance work and retirement goals. By offering clear explanations and supportive communication, HR and other leaders in a company can empower employees to make informed choices about their schedules, earnings, and long‑term plans.
